Newtonian Fluid
It’s technically Newtonian fluid, though we call it quicksand. Did you know that human buoyancy won’t allow a person to fully sink - you just get stuck, uncomfortably stuck, to the point where you can’t get out without help.
It’s too common that department heads tell me how their jobs are getting harder, and their departments don’t have the time nor resources to do their jobs well - or effectively - anymore. You can hear the burnout and acceptance of impending failure. Budget cuts, policy changes, etc. Occupational quicksand; they need help.
It’s probably not their first time saying it, and it’s certainly not my first time hearing it. Are they complaining? Maybe. Am I complaining? No - I love to hear it (it’s why they profess to me). I understand as a manager, as a business owner and as a technologist, but most importantly, I have a history of doing something about it and I don’t just sympathize, I seek resolution. Most recently, I helped modernize one of the country’s largest clearinghouses. Before that, I built and sold a company to that same clearinghouse which revolutionized patient access; you can read about it here (KLAS subscription required.). We brought AI-enhanced curation to patient access in such a way that others haven’t figured it out after six years of chasing it. It was needed; timing was right, quicksand was evident and we had a life preserver.
Now, I’m leading a company that’s responding to a different war cry, with some very talented and committed people. These people all have stories, and they have missions, and we want the 340,000 or so hospitals, doctor’s offices surgery centers, diagnosticians, and other providers to know, we’re here to help.
